ONS Regional Statisticians PDF Print E-mail

These page provide information on and guidance produced by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) regional statisticians working in the East Midlands.  You can access a range of resources to help you find and understand data as well as read their regular newsletters.

The Allsopp Review of Statistics for Economic Policymaking recommended an Office for National Statistics or Government Statistical Service presence in each English region.  There are now two ONS statisticians working within and for the East Midlands:

Jen Beaumont, 0115 947 1777, This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it
Andy Botterill, 0115 947 1780,  This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it

They are co-located with the Strategy, Research and Evaluation Team in emda and will be collaborating with them and with other regional partners.

Why the there ONS statisticians in the regions?

They are here to:

•   Gather intelligence to help improve the quality of ONS data and processes, keeping ONS up to date with  changes in the regions;

•   Quality assure final estimates of regional Gross Value Added (GVA);

•   Help improve the quality of the Inter-Departmental Business Register (IDBR) and business survey data, which will feed through to regional GVA;

•   Provide access to IDBR data for the East Midlands Development Agency (emda);

•   Act as a focus to feed views through from regional bodies, assisting ONS in its decision-making;

•   Provide a first point of ONS contact for key regional bodies;

•   Provide independent advice to regional users on the use of ONS and other Government Statistical Service statistics, including on technical issues, such as the use of statistics in monitoring performance against targets;

•   Work with regional partners on collaborative projects;

•   Facilitate provision of training to regional partners on, for instance, economic statistics;

•   Assess, or assist in the assessment of locally commissioned or locally held data;

•   Provide a secure environment in the regions for researchers to have access to micro-data labs;

•   Act as a regional base, contact, liaison and support for other ONS staff, such as regional fieldwork managers.

Contact them by phone or email if you need to find out where data are, need training in how data can be used, know of gaps in the data or have ideas for research and analysis.
