Office for National Statistics releases this week have been:

Monday 25th

 

Focus on Consumer Prices December 2009: This monthly release looks at the detail underlying the main index and contains tables of latest figures, average retail prices, Consumer Price Index (CPI) data back to 1996, Retail Price Index (RPI) data back to 1987, long run series of consumer price inflation, purchasing power of the pound, EU Harmonised Index of Consumer Price Indices (HICP) back to 1998, seasonally adjusted RPIY and RPI pensioner indices.

Tuesday 26th

 

Gross Domestic Product Preliminary Estimate Quarter 4 2009: This release is the first (“month 1”) estimate of UK GDP, and will probably be the subject of a great deal of attention from the media looking for an end to the recession, although the preliminary estimate is based on incomplete data and may be revised over the next two months when the “month 2” and “month 3” estimates are released. The preliminary release includes tables showing the contribution to total GDP for broad industry groups.

Index of Services November 2009: This monthly release gives the movements in Gross Value Added (GVA) for the service industries, which make up around 75 per cent of the UK economy. The data underlying this index are also used in the estimation of quarterly GDP. Last month’s release showed that, year on year, output of the Service sector for October 2009 fell by 3.7 per cent. The release includes tables showing indices of change at a broad industry level.

Distributive & Services Trades November 2009: This monthly release provides information on turnover of various Distribution and Service industries at the three digit level of UK Standard Industrial Classification (SIC 2003). The December 2009 release in February 2010 will be the final update of the Distributive and Services Trades release. The January 2010 data will be released in the new Turnover and Orders in Production and Services Industries publication, which will be based on Standard Industrial Classification (SIC2007).

Pension Trends: Pension Trends contains chapters on pensions legislation and reforms; the ageing population and the transition from work to retirement; state pensions; private pensions, including membership of pension schemes, pension contributions and scheme funding and investment; saving for retirement; pensioner income (from pensions and other sources) and expenditure; and pensions in the National Accounts. This month sees updates to Chapter 14, Pensions and National accounts, and Chapter 13, Inequalities and Poverty in retirement.

Monthly digest of Statistics January 2010: This monthly publication gives a summary of a wide range of statistics from a variety of sources, including Gross Domestic Product (GDP); Population and vital statistics; Labour market; Social services, Law enforcement; Agriculture, food, drinks and tobacco; Production; Energy; Communications; Metals, engineering and vehicles; Textiles and other manufactures; Construction; Transport; Retailing; External trade in goods; UK balance of payments; Government finance; Prices and Wages; Leisure and Weather.

General Lifestyle Survey 2008: This annual survey of private households in Great Britain provides information on a range of topics, including smoking, drinking, ownership of consumer durables, marriage and cohabitation, pensions and health. Mortality Statistics, Deaths registered in England and Wales by Area of Usual Residence 2008: This annual publication presents data on death registrations in England and Wales by death rates and cause of death by age and sex by area of residence (unitary authority, county and district).

Divorces in England & Wales 2008: This annual publication gives the number and rates of divorce in England and Wales. Last year’s release showed that in 2007 the provisional divorce rate in England and Wales fell to 11.9 divorcing people per 1,000 married population compared with the 2006 figure of 12.2, the lowest level since 1981.

Alcohol-related Deaths in the UK 2010: This annual release presents data on alcohol-related deaths in 2008. Last year’s release showed that there were 8,724 alcohol-related deaths in 2007, lower than in 2006, but more than double the 4,144 recorded in 1991. In 2007 the alcohol-related death rate for all persons was 13.3 per 100,000 population, compared with 6.9 per 100,000 in 1991.

Suicides in the UK 2010: This annual release presents data on deaths by suicide in 2008. Last year’s release showed that suicide rates in both men and women continued to fall in 2007, reaching the lowest rates since 1991. In 2007 the rate for men was 16.8 per 100,000 population. Male suicide rates reached a peak of 21.1 per 100,000 in 1998. Female suicide rates have been consistently much lower than males and have decreased more steadily. The rate for women in 2007 was 5.0 per 100,000 population.

Local Area Labour Market January 2010: This quarterly release presents a number of different indicators to give an overall picture of the labour market of local areas, including statistics relating to the employment, unemployment and benefit dependency of the resident population of the area from the annual Labour Force and Annual Population Surveys. Data is shown at unitary authority, county, district and parliamentary constituency level of geographical detail.

Population Estimates by Ethnic Group (Experimental) Mid-2001 to mid-2007 for local authorities in England and Wales: This release updates the mid-2007 population estimates by ethnic group for England and Wales and their constituent administrative areas (Government Office Regions, unitary authorities, counties and local authority districts), by age and sex. These are experimental statistics and are consistent with the relevant mid-year population estimate.
