What is Intelligence East Midlands?
Intelligence East Midlands (IEM) is the region's observatory. It facilitates research co-ordination and promotes access to research and data on the region in order to inform policy-making.
IEM was established in 1999 as the East Midlands Observatory and was relaunched as Intelligence East Midlands in April 2004, prompted by a scoping study.
Intelligence East Midlands is a business unit of Regeneration East Midlands, the Regional Centre of Excellence for sustainable communities.

What does Intelligence East Midlands do?
Website IEM's online research database is a central repository of research, data and information of relevance to the region. The reports database currently holds over 700 records. All new additions to the website are publicised via regular email alerts: these currently have around 600 subscribers.
The website also houses the evidence base for the Regional Economic Strategy, which includes an interactive mapping tool and the evidence base for the Employment Skills and Productivity partnership (ESP).
Publications We publish a regular bulletin of research currently underway or planned by a number of key regional partners as way of raising awareness of who is doing what and hopefully reducing the chances of duplication. Research featured in the bulletin can be accessed once published via the online reports database.
We also produce occasional briefing papers on topical issues. These are produced by experts in the region and provide a concise and easily digestible overview of a given subject. They can be a good way of disseminating research findings or information to a wide audience. If you have any suggestions for topics that may be of interest or would like to contribute to a briefing, please let me know.
Other regular publications available from the website include our quarterly newsletter, monthly economic monitor produced with emda, ONS Regional Statisticians newsletter and monthy labour market statistics.
Networks The East Midlands Intelligence Network is a joint initiative between Intelligence East Midlands (IEM) and the East Midlands Cultural Observatory. Providing a forum for dissemination of research, sharing experience and good practice, the network brings together people involved in providing and using intelligence for decision-making from across the East Midlands. The network hosts a programme of topical events throughout the year. With keynote speakers, group discussions and opportunities for networking and finding out about sources of information and expertise, events are half a day long and take place at venues across the region.
IEM also facilitates a regional network of local information systems and other key providers of intelligence to share plans and expertise and discuss issues of common interest.
Training As part of the REM training programme we are coordinating a number of Intelligence workshops. These are aimed mainly at those in the public and voluntary sectors with little or no experience of research and analysis but who need to find and use evidence. Sessions include understanding data, commissioning research and maximising the impact of research.
Seminars: IEM organises occasional additional seminars on topics of interest such as the Indices of Deprivation 2007.
